Father Leo is the national director for 'Missio' (Päpstliche Missionswerke in Österreich - based in Vienna).

For many years, he accompanied Mother Teresa on her journeys and to the openings of new houses on different continents. He preached retreats for her sisters all over the world. When Mother Teresa opened her first houses in Moscow and in Armenia in 1988, Father Leo was the sisters' spiritual counsellor for several months, and thus the first 'official' Catholic priest in the Soviet Union at that time. Afterwards, together with an Italian businessperson, he launched the Catholic radio station Radio Maria, which is now present on all the continents. In the context of the beatification Mother Teresa, he's the only member of the team who does not belong to Mother Teresa’s Congregation. He has written a book 'Mother Teresa - Wonderful Stories' which is currently published in German, Macedonian & Albanian; the English translation will be out soon.

How do you see young people today, how can they be attracted to the church?
"I see now primarily young people in Austria. Two things are happening. They are really poor in the sense as Mother Teresa understood poverty. She spoke about physical poverty, social poverty and spiritual poverty. These poor young people are in a terrible spiritual poverty. Christ was never announced or shown to them. At the same time, a miracle is happening: small groups, communities, prayer groups come up, and young people are very open for these groups. I am astonished how open they are and what a longing they have after truth. In a time, in which it is repeated to us that there is no truth, that everything is relative, they are interiorly called to seek the only stable truth, which we find in Christ."}

_{1. Selig bist Du, Maria, die Du geglaubt hast! So lobpreisen wir Dich zusammen mit Elisabeth (Lk 1, 45). Selig bist Du, Mutter unseres Herrn Jesus Christus und Mutter der Kirche.} 

_{Unser aller Mutter bist Du, die wir heute diese Wallfahrt zu Deinem Heiligtum in Mariazell unternommen haben: Bischöfe, Priester, Diakone, Ordensleute, Seminaristen, Novizen und viele Gläubige von nah und fern zusammen mit dem Nachfolger des Apostels Petrus inmitten des pilgernden Gottesvolkes.}

_{Vor Dir möchten wir dieses Gebet unserer Weihe aussprechen. Deinem reinen Herzen vertrauen wir alles an, was uns in dieser Stunde zutiefst bewegt: all unsere berechtigten Wünsche und Hoffnungen, zugleich aber auch unsere Sorgen und Leiden. Führe uns mit unseren Freuden und Lasten zu Deinem Sohn, in das Heiligtum seines liebenden Herzens, damit er seinen Brüdern und Schwestern den Vater zeige, das selige Ziel unserer Wege.}

_{2. Heilige Mutter von Mariazell! Dir überantworten wir dieses Land mit seinen Dörfern und Städten, ganz Österreich und seine Bewohner. Sein kostbares Erbe, das Christentum, möge weiterhin das Leben der einzelnen und der Familien, das Leben der Gesellschaft und des Staates heilen und prägen. Wieviel Tränen, wieviel Angst, wieviel Dunkel auf dem Weg!}

_{Das Kreuz Deines Sohnes leuchte ihnen auf als Zeichen des unendlichen Erbarmens Gottes. Zeige ihnen die Gesinnung Christi, die es möglich macht, das Böse durch das Gute zu besiegen (Röm 12, 21) durch tapfere Liebe zu einer neuen Lebenserfüllung zu gelangen. Nimm an, barmherzige Mutter, jeden selbstlosen Samariterdienst, jede freiwillig geschenkte Stunde im Dienst für den Nächsten in Bedrängnis!}

Ebenso empfehlen wir Dir die Menschen in der vollen Kraft ihres Lebens, Männer und Frauen, die für ihre Familie, für ihren Berufsbereich, für die Gemeinschaftsaufgaben im Lande verantwortlich sind. Laß sie in der Frohen Botschaft Licht und Kraft für ihre Pläne und Entscheidungen finden, geleitet von einem reifen christlichen Gewissen: die Väter und Mütter, die Lehrer und Ärzte, die Wissenschaftler und Politiker, die Polizisten, Soldaten und alle, die dem Gemeinwohl dienen. Zeige ihnen den leuchtenden Wert der Wahrheit, das hohe Gut der Gerechtigkeit, den stillen Glanz der Selbstlosigkeit!}

_{5. Deinen mütterlichen Schutz, Maria, erbitten wir auch für die junge Generation: Kinder, Burschen und Mädchen, junge Männer und Frauen. Geleite sie behutsam Schritt für Schritt auf dem Weg christlicher Verantwortung für sich selbst und die Gemeinschaft: die Mutigen und die Starken, die Unternehmungslustigen und die Zupackenden; ebenso die Stillen, die Zögernden, die Abwägenden; die Lachenden und die Ernsten.}

_{Laß in ihren Herzen das Licht jener Ideale nicht verlöschen, die dem Leben des Menschen seinen wahren Wert geben. Niemand soll sie auslöschen: weder die jungen Menschen selbst noch irgendjemand sonst. Mutter, segne die Jugend, daß sie fähig werde, von sich selbst viel zu fordern und anderen viel zu geben, den Versuchungen einer Genußwelt zu widerstehen und dem Wohl ihres Nächsten zu dienen.}

Schließlich weihen wir Dir, Gottesmutter von Mariazell, die Kirche Jesu Christi hier in Österreich: alle, die in ihr Verantwortung tragen und ihr dienen, alle Hirten und Gläubigen ín den Diözesen Salzburg und Wien; Sankt Pölten und Linz; Graz-Seckau und Eisenstadt; Gurk, Innsbruck und Feldkirch. Die Kirche erfülle heute wie in Zukunft ihren Heilsauftrag: im Namen des Evangeliums Jesu Christi, in fester Einheit mit den anderen Ortskirchen der Weltkirche und mit dem Petrusamt in Rom, zum Wohl und Segen aller Menschen dieses Landes, der Einheimischen und der Zugezogenen, der Gläubigen und der Suchenden.}

_{Your Eminence, Your Honour, Dear Brothers and Sisters!}

_{As the first stop of my pilgrimage to Mariazell I have chosen the Mariensäule, to reflect briefly with all of you on the significance of the Mother of God for Austria past and present, and her significance for each one of us. I offer a cordial greeting to all those gathered here to pray beneath the Mariensäule. I thank you, dear Eminence, for the warm words of welcome at the beginning of our celebration. I greet the Mayor of the capital and the other Authorities present. I particularly greet the young people and the representatives of the foreign-language Catholic communities in the Archdiocese of Vienna, who will gather after this Liturgy of the Word in the church and will remain until tomorrow in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. I have heard that you have been here for three hours already. I can only express my admiration and say Vergelt’s Gott! With this adoration you will very concretely accomplish what all of us wish to do in these days: with Mary, to look to Christ.}

_{From earliest times, faith in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God, has been linked to a particular veneration for his Mother, for the Woman in whose womb he took on our human nature, sharing even in the beating of her heart. Mary is the Woman who accompanied Jesus with sensitivity and deference throughout his life, even to his death on the Cross. At the end, he commended to her maternal love the beloved disciple and, with him, all humanity. In her maternal love, Mary continues to take under her protection people of all languages and cultures, and to lead them together, within a multiform unity, to Christ. In our problems and needs we can turn to Mary. Yet we must also learn from her to accept one another lovingly in the same way that she has accepted all of us: each as an individual, willed as such and loved by God. In God’s universal family, in which there there is a place for everyone, each person must develop his gifts for the good of all.}

_{The Mariensäule, built by the Emperor Ferdinand III in thanksgiving for the liberation of Vienna from great danger and inaugurated by him exactly 360 years ago, must also be a sign of hope for us today. How many persons, over the years, have stood before this column and lifted their gaze to Mary in prayer! How many have experienced in times of trouble the power of her intercession! Our Christian hope includes much more than the mere fulfilment of our wishes and desires, great or small. We turn our gaze to Mary, because she points out to us the great hope to which we have been called, because she personifies our true humanity!}

_{This is what we have just heard in the biblical reading: even before the creation of the world, God chose us in Christ. From eternity he has known and loved each one of us! And why did he choose us? To be holy and immaculate before him in love! This is no impossible task: in Christ he has already brought it to fulfilment. We have been redeemed! By virtue of our communion with the Risen Christ, God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. Let us open our hearts; let us accept this precious legacy! Then we will be able to sing, together with Mary, the praises of his glorious grace. And if we continue to bring our everyday concerns to the immaculate Mother of Christ, she will help us to open our little hopes ever more fully towards that great and true hope which gives meaning to our lives and is able to fill us with a deep and imperishable joy.}

_{With these sentiments I would now like to join you in looking to Mary Immaculate, entrusting to her intercession the prayers which you have just now presented, and imploring her maternal protection upon this country and its people:}

Holy Mary, Immaculate Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, in you God has given us the model of the Church and of genuine humanity. To you I entrust the country of Austria and its people. Help all of us to follow your example and to direct our lives completely to God! Grant that, by looking to Christ, we may become ever more like him: true children of God! Then we too, filled with every spiritual blessing, will be able to conform ourselves more fully to his will and to become instruments of his peace for Austria, Europe and the world. Amen.
